A tactile switch is activated by gently pressing the switch button to close the circuit, and the switch opens when released. Its internal structure relies on a metal spring piece that flexes under force to make or break the connection. Due to its low contact resistance, crisp tactile feedback, and comprehensive height specifications, tactile switches are widely used in household appliances such as audio-visual products, digital products, remote controls, communication products, home appliances, security products, toys, computer products, fitness equipment, medical devices, counterfeit detection pens, laser pointer buttons, and more.
First is the pin substrate; the pin substrate of a tactile switch is made of brass or phosphor bronze (lower-grade ones use iron). To reduce contact resistance, the pins are generally silver-plated. Since silver oxidizes when exposed to SO2 gas in the air, directly affecting the solderability and contact resistance of the switch, high-quality tactile switches must control the thickness and plating process of the silver on the pin substrate precisely. The key factor affecting conduction reliability is the structure of the contact point. Because the function of the tactile switch is to make contact between the contact point and the spring piece, the larger the contact surface, the better. The contact surface is determined by the structure. There are roughly three types of structures on the market, ranked from best to worst: large bubble (volcano type), "O-shaped contact", slotted "2-point contact", and flat bubble "1-point contact". The lifespan and tactile feel are determined by the travel distance of the switch and the coordination with the spring piece. The shorter the travel, the quieter and longer the lifespan; the longer the travel, the opposite. Under fixed spring piece technology, the lifespan of the tactile switch mainly depends on travel or sound. Additionally, the key factor determining the spring piece's lifespan is stamping technology.

However, tactile switches also have their drawbacks. Frequent pressing can cause the metal spring piece to fatigue and lose elasticity, leading to failure. Therefore, most buttons in current appliances use conductive rubber or metal spring pieces from dome switches as direct replacements, such as in computer keyboards and remote controls. A good tactile switch is very important for the overall product lifespan, such as in computer keyboards and remote controls. If a low-quality tactile switch is used, frequent pressing will cause the metal spring piece to fatigue and lose elasticity, resulting in failure. Hence, selecting a tactile switch is quite important. The quality factors of a tactile switch mainly depend on its protection, solderability, conduction reliability, lifespan, tactile feel, manufacturing process, and installation dimensions. After obtaining the components, the final quality is influenced by the assembly process, which depends on the manufacturing company's management capability, employee quality awareness, and quality assurance ability. Different assurance capabilities will definitely result in different final product qualities. Currently, assembly methods in the market include manual and machine assembly. Since automation capabilities are still improving, each has its pros and cons: machine assembly has low cost but lower product quality, while manual assembly has higher cost but better quality.
