Overload Protector Switch: Working Principle, Application Scenarios & Usage Precautions

Overload Protector Switch: Working Principle, Application Scenarios & Usage Precautions

1. What is an Overload Protector Switch

An overload protector switch, also referred to as an overload protector, is an essential safety protection component in electrical circuits. It is widely used in various electrical appliances, power supply equipment and electromechanical circuits. When the circuit suffers from current overload or abnormal excessive load, the switch can automatically cut off the circuit to prevent potential safety hazards such as circuit burnout, equipment damage and fire, acting as a "guardian" for circuit safety.

2. Working Principle of Overload Protector Switch

The overload protector switch is designed based on the thermal expansion principle with a built-in bimetallic strip structure as its core component.

Under normal working conditions, the circuit current is within the rated standard range, the bimetallic strip remains in its original shape, the contacts are closed, and the circuit conducts power supply normally.

When overload occurs in the circuit and the current exceeds the rated current of the switch, the circuit will continuously generate high temperature. The bimetallic strip bends and deforms due to different thermal expansion coefficients; when the deformation reaches a certain angle, it pushes the internal tripping mechanism to act, instantly disconnecting the circuit contacts and cutting off the power supply loop.

After the circuit fault is eliminated and the temperature cools down, the bimetallic strip returns to its original state. The switch can be manually reset to restore normal power supply of the circuit, realizing the safety mechanism of automatic protection and manual reset.

3. Common Application Scenarios of Overload Protector Switch

1. Household Small Appliances

Hair dryers, electric kettles, rice cookers, heaters, juicers, induction cookers, etc., to prevent burnout caused by internal circuit aging and excessive load of household appliances.

2. Power Supplies & Adapters

Switching power supplies, charging pile adapters, lithium battery chargers, outdoor portable power stations, to protect the power supply motherboard from component breakdown due to instantaneous overload.

3. Electromechanical & Industrial Control Equipment

Small motors, water pumps, fans, air compressors, assembly line industrial control circuits, to avoid coil burnout caused by motor stalling and load jamming.

4. Sockets & Power Distribution Terminals

High-power power strips, industrial wiring sockets, lighting power distribution boxes, for overload protection of household and commercial power distribution circuits.

5. Vehicle & Outdoor Equipment

Vehicle electrical appliances, RV power distribution systems, outdoor photovoltaic power supply systems, suitable for complex power consumption environments to eliminate safety accidents caused by current overload.

4. Usage Precautions for Overload Protector Switch

1. Match the Rated Current Correctly

Select the model strictly according to the actual working current of the equipment (common specifications: 10A, 15A, etc.). It is strictly forbidden to use a low-current switch for high-power loads, which will cause frequent tripping; do not use an oversized model randomly, otherwise the overload protection function will be invalid.

2. Standard Installation Requirements

Secure the wiring during installation, and tighten the terminals and nut accessories to avoid heating caused by loose wiring and misoperation of the switch. Keep the installation position ventilated and heat-dissipating, and do not seal or wrap it tightly.

3. Prohibit Unauthorized Modification and Disassembly

The overload protector switch is a precision safety component. Do not disassemble the internal structure or modify the contacts and bimetallic strips. Unauthorized modification will lose the safety protection capability and pose a great safety hazard.

4. Troubleshoot Before Resetting

After the switch trips due to overload, first check whether the rear-end equipment and circuit are short-circuited or overloaded. Eliminate faults before manual reset, and do not forcibly reset repeatedly.

5. Adapt to the Working Environment

Avoid long-term use in high-temperature, humid, corrosive and dusty environments. Harsh environments will accelerate the aging of internal components, shorten the service life and affect the protection accuracy.
