Applications and Precautions for Touch Switches

A tactile switch, also known as a push-button switch or momentary switch, is a type of electronic switch. Its key feature is that the circuit connects when pressed and disconnects when released.

What is a tactile switch?

A tactile switch, also known as a push-button switch or momentary switch, is a type of electronic switch. Its key features are: When pressed, the circuit connects; when released, the circuit disconnects. It does not have a self-locking function on its own; its on/off state is entirely controlled by manual pressing.

I. Primary Use Cases

Due to their small size, low cost, and ease of use, tactile switches are widely employed in various electronic devices as input devices for human-machine interaction.

1. Consumer electronics

(1) Home Appliances : Control panels for microwave ovens, rice cookers, air conditioners, and washing machines.

(2) Audiovisual Equipment : The power and function buttons on the remote controls for TVs, stereos, and set-top boxes.

(3) Computer peripherals : Every key on the keyboard (except for mechanical keyboards), and the left and right mouse buttons.

(4) Communication Equipment : The volume buttons and power button on the side of the phone (found on some early models).

(5) Digital Products : Camera shutter, control buttons on game controllers.

2. Industrial Control and Equipment

(1) Industrial Control Panel Buttons for functions such as device startup, shutdown, reset, and mode selection.

(2) Testing and Measurement Instruments : Function selection keys for multimeters, oscilloscopes, and signal generators.

(3) Security System : The operation buttons for smart access control and alarms.

(4) Medical equipment: Control buttons for patient call systems, medical monitors, and infusion pumps. These applications typically demand exceptionally high reliability and durability from the switches.

(5) Automotive Electronics: Car audio system, central control screen, and control buttons on the steering wheel.

(6) Smart Homes and IoT Devices: Control buttons for smart switches, smart doorbells, and robotic vacuum cleaners.

II. Important Notes

Properly using tactile switches is key to ensuring the long-term stable operation of your equipment. Here are several essential points to keep in mind:

1. Electrical Parameters (Core and Critical)

Rated Voltage/Current Absolutely do not Exceeding the switch's rated specifications. Overvoltage or overcurrent can generate electric arcs, burn out the contacts, and lead to switch failure—or even cause fires.

Contact Resistance : High-quality switches have low and stable contact resistance. In circuits where signal accuracy is critical, excessive contact resistance can degrade performance.

Insulation resistance : Ensure the switch is in the OFF position and that there is sufficient insulation resistance between the pins to prevent leakage current.

2. Mechanical Parameters and Installation

Operational Force : The force required to press the switch. It needs to be selected based on the usage scenario—too light, and it may trigger unintended actions; too heavy, and it can compromise the feel of operation.

Itinerary : The distance a key travels from its initial position to the contact point. This affects the key's "feel."

Lifespan : The number of reliable actuations a switch can withstand. Consumer-grade products typically last for hundreds of thousands of cycles, while industrial-grade switches can endure over a million cycles. When selecting one, consider the equipment's anticipated usage frequency.

Installation Method : The mounting holes on the PCB board must be designed strictly according to the switch's dimensions, ensuring that the switch pins align perfectly with the pads. After soldering, the switch should remain flat, without any tilting or stress applied.

3. Welding and Cleaning Processes

Welding temperature and time When performing manual soldering, a constant-temperature soldering iron should be used (recommended temperature: 350°C ± 10°C), and the soldering time should be kept within Within 3 seconds , avoiding overheating that could cause plastic components to melt or damage the internal structure.

Wave Soldering : If wave soldering is required, it's essential to confirm the temperature resistance rating of the switch body to prevent high-temperature deformation; typically, the temperature should be controlled between 250°C and 260°C.

Cleaning : If the PCB board needs cleaning, choose a cleaning agent compatible with the switch material (such as alcohol), and avoid using ultrasonic cleaning, as high-frequency vibrations may damage the internal spring contacts of the switch or compromise its sealing performance.

4. Usage Environment

Dustproof and waterproof : Standard tactile switches are not waterproof or dustproof. If used in damp, dusty, or oily environments (such as kitchens or outdoor settings), you must choose a model equipped with sealing gaskets or implement additional protective measures (like installing a waterproof film).

Temperature : Avoid using outside the switch's specified operating temperature range, as extreme temperatures can affect the performance of the spring contacts and reduce the lifespan of the plastic components.

Chemical gas : Avoid using in environments with strong acids, strong bases, or corrosive gases, as these can corrode the metal contacts and外壳.

5. Operating Habits

Avoid forceful pressing : Absolutely no using sharp objects (such as fingernails or pen tips) to forcefully poke the buttons, nor applying excessive force or pressing down with tools, as this may cause the internal spring pieces to become permanently deformed and fail.

Keep it clean : Regularly clean the dust and grime around the buttons to prevent them from entering the switch mechanism and causing poor contact.

6. Circuit Design Considerations

Debouncing Processing Due to the physical characteristics of mechanical contacts, a series of unstable on-off signals—known as "bouncing"—are generated at the moment of pressing and releasing. In digital circuits such as microcontrollers, Debouncing must be performed either through hardware (such as an RC circuit) or via software (by implementing a delay-based judgment). Otherwise, a single press might be misinterpreted as multiple presses.

What is a Cannon connector?

The Cannon connector, known in English as the XLR Connector, is an electrical connector widely used in professional audio, video, and stage lighting applications. Its name "XLR" originates from the original model series ("X" series) developed by its manufacturer, Cannon Electric (now part of ITT Corporation), combined with the first letters of Latch (for the locking mechanism) and Rubber (referring to the rubber insulation material used in early versions).
