Working Principle of an Illuminated Tactile Switch
The core principle of an illuminated tactile switch is "momentary action" — it conducts when pressed and disconnects when released. Internally, it consists of two independent yet coordinated systems: one for switching the circuit, and the other for controlling the indicator light.
Below is a structural schematic diagram that helps illustrate how these two core functional parts work:

Switch Section: Mechanical Contact Make-and-Break
The working principle of this section is straightforward and can be summarized as "make on press, break on release."
Core Component: The heart of the switch is a metal dome (also known as a snap dome or contact spring).
When Pressed: When you press the actuator with your finger, the applied force causes the metal dome to deform elastically, allowing it to make contact with the two fixed terminals inside the switch, thereby closing the circuit.
When Released: When you remove your finger, the dome's inherent resilience returns it to its original shape, breaking the contact with the terminals and opening the circuit.
Tactile Feedback: Many illuminated tactile switches produce an audible "click" sound when pressed to a certain point. This click is generated by the snap-through action of the metal dome during its deformation and provides clear tactile feedback to the user.

Illumination Section: LED Indicator Operation
The illumination is typically synchronized with the switching action. However, with technological advancements, the lighting effects have become more versatile.
Simultaneous Illumination: Inside the switch, in addition to the contact terminals, there are dedicated pins for the built-in LED. When the switch's circuit is closed (conducting state), the LED circuit is also completed, and the light turns on simultaneously.
Basic Application: This is similar to the indicator light on the power button of many household appliances — its most direct purpose is to provide clear visual feedback, indicating to the user that "the device is now powered on."
Advanced Control: In more intelligent or design-oriented products, lighting control becomes more flexible. For example, some switches utilize a microcontroller or IC on the PCB to drive the LED, achieving effects such as "latching on/off" (lights toggle on each successive press), or even more sophisticated patterns like breathing (fade-in/fade-out) or blinking effects.
